Katra, Feb 18 : The Sangharsh Samiti has called for a bandh in Katra today after talks with authorities over the proposed ropeway project failed to yield any resolution.

The shutdown follows rising opposition from local traders and residents who fear that the ropeway, planned along the Baltal–Charan Paduka stretch leading to the Vaishno Devi Temple, could severely affect their livelihoods.

Members of the Samiti allege that once operational, the ropeway would significantly reduce footfall along the traditional trekking route. Shopkeepers operating between Banganga and Charan Paduka say thousands of families dependent on pilgrim movement along the track may face economic hardship if the project goes ahead in its current form.

The issue was also raised in the Assembly, drawing political attention amid mounting protests.

As a precautionary measure, security has been stepped up across Katra to maintain law and order during the bandh. Markets in the Charan Paduka area are expected to remain closed in support of the protest.

Authorities have appealed for calm and said discussions on the ropeway project are likely to continue in an effort to find a way forward.
