SRINAGAR, FEB 14: IMRAN NAIKOO
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday inaugurated the annual AgriTech Mela, Gongul-2026, at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) in Srinagar.

Addressing farmers, scientists and stakeholders on the occasion, the Chief Minister said his government is making all-out efforts to strengthen the rural economy of Jammu and Kashmir through technological interventions, innovation in agriculture and the promotion of organic farming practices. He emphasized that adopting modern agri-technologies and sustainable methods is key to increasing farm productivity and improving farmers’ incomes.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, Omar Abdullah expressed serious concern over the proposed trade agreement with the United States, warning that if adequate safeguards are not put in place, the deal could prove disastrous for the Union Territory’s horticulture sector, particularly apple growers. He said the interests of local farmers and orchardists must be protected before entering into any such agreement.

The AgriTech Mela Gongul-2026 aims to provide a platform for farmers, agri-startups and experts to exchange knowledge, showcase new technologies and explore sustainable farming solutions for the region.
