Saifullah Mir, MLA from Tarhagam, raised serious and pointed questions in the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly over the entry of rotten and decayed meat into Kashmir, demanding strict accountability from the government.
The MLA questioned how spoiled meat managed to reach Jammu and Kashmir despite the presence of government toll posts and checkpoints at multiple locations. He sought clarity on the role of the Police Department in stopping such consignments and asked what action was taken to intercept and prevent the supply of unsafe meat.
Saifullah Mir also questioned the role of the Food Safety Department, which conducts checking at various points, and asked how such hazardous food items passed through inspections. He further pointed out that Municipal Corporation employees are also active in the field, raising concerns about coordination and enforcement among departments.
Highlighting that four key departments are responsible for ensuring cleanliness and quality of meat and other essential food items, the MLA asked:
What actions were taken by these departments?
What are their defined responsibilities?
Where did the system fail?
Seeking concrete details, Saifullah Mir demanded information on:
Who has been arrested in connection with the supply of rotten meat
How much meat was seized
How much money was recovered as fines
How much of the fine amount was deposited into the government treasury
Whether responsibility has been fixed on any officials for negligence
He further asked the government to clarify how many people have been punished after arrest, stressing that mere arrests without convictions would not deter such crimes.
The MLA strongly pressed the government for strict, time-bound answers, stating that the issue directly concerns public health and safety, and warned that accountability must be ensured to prevent such incidents in the future.
