In a significant development aimed at transforming urban transport infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, the government has informed the Legislative Assembly that the proposed Metro/Light Rail projects for Jammu and Srinagar are awaiting final approval and funding clearance from the Central Government.

Replying to a question raised by legislator Arvind Gupta, the government said that in-principle approval for the elevated Metrolite systems in both capital cities had already been granted by the Administrative Council. The approval was accorded through Administrative Council Decision No. 12/3/2021 dated February 13, 2021.

The government further revealed that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the Metro/Light Rail projects in Jammu and Srinagar have been completed and submitted to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, for technical appraisal and financial assistance.

As per the official reply, the estimated cost of the proposed Metrolite project for Jammu city is Rs 4,069.48 crore, while the project for Srinagar city is estimated at Rs 5,892.51 crore.

The House was informed that both proposals are currently under consideration with the Union Ministry, and the final response regarding approval and funding support from MoHUA is still awaited.

The proposed Metro/Light Rail systems are expected to play a crucial role in easing growing traffic congestion, improving public transportation, and promoting eco-friendly urban mobility in the twin capital cities. With rapid urbanisation and increasing vehicular movement putting pressure on existing road infrastructure, the projects are being viewed as a long-term solution to meet the transportation needs of expanding urban populations.

Officials maintained that progress on the projects will depend on the Centre’s appraisal and sanction of funds. Once cleared, the Metro/Light Rail projects are expected to significantly modernise the public transport network and improve connectivity across Jammu and Srinagar.

The government reiterated its commitment to strengthening urban infrastructure and expressed optimism that the projects will contribute towards sustainable urban development and improved commuting facilities in Jammu and Kashmir.
