New Delhi, Jan 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 78th death anniversary, saying the Father of the Nation’s emphasis on Swadeshi remains a fundamental pillar of a developed and self-reliant India.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals continue to inspire the nation to walk the path of duty. “Revered Bapu always laid strong emphasis on Swadeshi, which is also a fundamental pillar of our resolve for a developed and self-reliant India. His personality and deeds will forever inspire the people of the country,” he said.
In a separate message, PM Modi highlighted Gandhi’s unwavering belief in non-violence, calling it a powerful force capable of transforming the world without weapons. He said Gandhi viewed non-violence as the highest duty, truth, and moral principle guiding humanity.
Senior BJP leader and Union Minister J.P. Nadda also paid homage, describing Mahatma Gandhi as the embodiment of sacrifice, penance, truth, and non-violence. He said Gandhi’s thoughts and life philosophy continue to guide the nation in building a self-reliant and developed India.
Mahatma Gandhi, a central figure in India’s freedom struggle, was assassinated on January 30, 1948, while on his way to attend a prayer meeting. The day is observed annually as Martyrs’ Day.
To mark the occasion, the Centre will hold an all-religion prayer meeting and a Martyrs’ Day ceremony at Rajghat in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Rajghat Samadhi Committee Chairman Manohar Lal. Prime Minister Modi traditionally pays floral tributes at Rajghat on the day.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory in view of official functions at Rajghat and Mahatma Gandhi Smriti Sthal. Traffic diversions may be imposed at key locations, including ITO Chowk, Delhi Gate, Guru Nanak Chowk, Shantivan Chowk, Rajghat DTC Depot, and the IP Flyover, due to heightened security and the presence of dignitaries.
