Students of the University of Jammu on Tuesday staged a protest, demanding the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in the Jammu region. The protesting students said the absence of an NLU in Jammu has deprived aspiring law students of quality legal education and equal opportunities.

Raising slogans and holding placards, the students urged the government to address the long-pending demand and ensure regional balance in higher education infrastructure. They said that several other states and regions have well-established NLUs, while Jammu continues to lag behind despite having a large number of law aspirants.

The protesters argued that the establishment of a National Law University in Jammu would not only benefit students from the region but also strengthen the overall academic and legal ecosystem of Jammu and Kashmir. They said an NLU would create opportunities for advanced legal research, judicial training, and professional development.

Students also highlighted that many local aspirants are forced to migrate to other states for legal education, incurring heavy financial burdens on families. They said a centrally recognised law university in Jammu would help reduce this pressure and ensure access to quality education within the region.

Calling for immediate government intervention, the students appealed to the Lieutenant Governor-led administration and the Union Ministry of Education to take concrete steps towards setting up the National Law University.

The protest remained peaceful, and university authorities said the students’ concerns would be conveyed to the appropriate authorities. The demand for an NLU in Jammu has been raised on multiple occasions in the past, but no final decision has been announced so far.
