New Delhi, Dec 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to the heroes of the 1971 war on the occasion of the 54th Vijay Diwas, remembering the courage and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces that led to the liberation of Bangladesh.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the nation will always remember the bravery and selfless service of the soldiers who secured India’s historic victory in 1971. He described Vijay Diwas as a moment of pride and a lasting salute to the valour and unmatched spirit of the armed forces, whose heroism continues to inspire generations.
President Droupadi Murmu also paid homage to the fallen soldiers, recalling the courage, patriotism, and devotion of the Indian Armed Forces. She said their bravery has always filled the nation with pride and noted that their legacy continues to guide India’s preparedness for future challenges. Referring to recent military operations, she highlighted the armed forces’ strategic resolve, self-reliance, and effective use of modern warfare, and extended her best wishes to soldiers and their families.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the 1971 victory was the result of flawless coordination between the Army, Navy, and Air Force. He noted that the decisive defeat of the Pakistani Army reshaped history and firmly established India’s strategic strength. He said the valour, discipline, and combat spirit displayed during the war remain a source of inspiration for the nation.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath remembered the indomitable bravery of Indian soldiers, saying the country remains indebted to their sacrifices and will forever draw strength from their legacy of heroism.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also paid tribute to the armed forces, describing the 1971 victory as a landmark moment that ensured the independence of Bangladesh. He said the outcome of the war stood as an example of humanity and justice, achieved under the leadership of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He saluted the courage and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces and the Mukti Bahini, saying their contribution will always be remembered by a grateful nation.
