Jammu Dec 5 : Public frustration is growing in the Pir Panjal region and parts of the Kashmir Valley as work on the Mughal Road tunnel is yet to begin, six months after the project was cleared by the central government. The approval in June 2025 had brought a strong sense of relief and hope, with many calling it a landmark step toward better connectivity.
The project, estimated at ₹3,833 crore, was expected to move quickly. But with no visible progress on the ground, residents say their optimism is fading. They point out that the tunnel is crucial for turning the Mughal Road into an all-weather route, especially since the road remains closed for nearly half the year due to snowfall.
Locals also believe the project could open up jobs for educated youth and give the region an economic boost. Many say that each winter, closures of the route disrupt travel and hurt livelihoods, making the tunnel even more important.
People are urging the central government to begin the work without further delay so the region can benefit from better connectivity and more employment opportunities.
