Srinagar/Dehi , October 6, 2025: The Supreme Court of India on Monday issued notice to the Central Government on a writ petition filed by Gitanjali Angmo, wife of Ladakh social activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA), 1980 following recent violent clashes in Ladakh.
The petition, filed under Article 32, is a habeas corpus plea seeking Wangchuk’s release. It contends that the detention is illegal under Article 22, as no formal grounds of arrest have been communicated to either Wangchuk or his wife.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the petitioner, requested the Court for an interim order to provide the grounds of detention to Gitanjali Angmo. In response, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta stated that the grounds had been served to Wangchuk and emphasized that there is no legal requirement to furnish them to the wife.
The bench, comprising Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice NV Anjaria, scheduled the next hearing for Tuesday, October 14. Justice Kumar noted that the petitioner may first formally request a meeting with her husband, and if denied, the Court could consider the matter.
The Solicitor General also informed the Court that Wangchuk has received medical attention and is not on any medication, while assuring that any necessary medical supplies would be provided. The Supreme Court will examine all aspects of the case during the upcoming hearing.
