Srinagar, October 3, 2025 – Gitanjali Angmo, wife of Ladakh social activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, has approached the Supreme Court challenging her husband’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA).

The petition, filed under Article 32 of the Constitution, follows Wangchuk’s detention on September 26 after protests erupted in Ladakh demanding statehood for the region. He has reportedly been lodged in a Jodhpur (Rajasthan) jail since then.

Through the habeas corpus plea, Gitanjali Angmo has sought his immediate release, expressing concern over the lack of information regarding his health, condition, and grounds of detention. She wrote on social media: “It is one week today. Still I have no information about Sonam Wangchuk’s health, the condition he is in nor the grounds of detention.”

The matter is likely to be taken up for urgent hearing once the Supreme Court reopens on October 6 after the Dussehra holidays.

Wangchuk, a Ramon Magsaysay awardee, has been a prominent voice on environmental and social issues in Ladakh.
