Srinagar, Aug 14: On the occasion of Independence Day 2025, Jammu & Kashmir Police has achieved a historic feat by topping the national list of Gallantry Medal recipients, securing an impressive 127 Medals for Gallantry (GM) — the highest among all States, Union Territories, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).
The distinction recognises acts of exceptional bravery and courage, particularly in high-risk situations. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) followed with 20 Gallantry Medals, while Chhattisgarh Police ranked third with 14 medals. The Border Security Force (BSF) also made a significant mark, bagging 16 Gallantry Medals.
In addition to gallantry honours, the Government of India awarded 89 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 635 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM) to personnel across the nation’s police, fire, home guard, civil defence, and correctional departments.
The high tally for J&K Police reflects the challenging operational environment in the Union Territory, where personnel face complex security scenarios on a daily basis. From anti-terror operations to law and order management, their service involves constant risk and sacrifice.
Security experts believe this recognition underscores the exceptional professionalism, resilience, and dedication of the J&K Police in safeguarding lives and ensuring peace.
Officials in the UT have lauded the awardees, noting that such honours not only acknowledge past bravery but also inspire the next generation of officers to serve with the same commitment.
This Independence Day’s honours list stands as a testament to the courage of India’s security forces and their unwavering duty to the nation.
