Jammu , Jan 14: Five people lost their lives and two others were critically injured in a head-on collision between two vehicles in Kargil district of Ladakh Union Territory today.
The accident occurred this afternoon on the Katpakachey Shilikchay road, approximately 2 km from Kargil city, when a Tipper and a Scorpio vehicle collided.
The tipper bearing No. 5118 JK02AD was carrying three locals and all of them died in the accident while Scorpio No. 1150 UP79A was having four persons, all non-locals and of them two were killed and two others were seriously injured.
Due to impact of the collision, both vehicles plunged into a deep gorge, resulting in the casualties.
The injured were rushed to the District Hospital in Kargil, where their condition remained critical.
Soon after the accident police and local people rushed to the spot for the rescue operation.
The locals who lost their lives have been identified as Mohd Hassan, son of Mohd Hussain, a resident of Stakpa; Liyaqat Ali, son of A.K. Raza, a resident of Choskore; and Mohd Ibrahim, son of Haji Mohd R/o Badgam, Kargil. The identities of the other two victims, who were non-locals are yet to be ascertained.
A case has been registered, and an investigation has been initiated.
Bodies of the non-locals have been kept in the hospital for identification and then handing over to the families.
However, bodies of the locals will be handed over to the families after post-mortem.
