SRINAGAR, Dec 11: The hills in Kashmir including the tourist resort of Sonamarg today received fresh snowfall while there was an improvement in the minimum temperatures across Kashmir.
The higher reaches of Kashmir including the tourist resort of Sonamarg received fresh snowfall since morning. Several inches of snow accumulated at the tourist place.
According to the forecast, light to moderate snowfall is expected at higher reaches including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Doodhpatri, Pahalgam, Peer Ki Gali, Sinthan Top, Razdan Top, Zojila Pass and other upper reaches during the period.
“Light rain is expected at some plains of Kashmir with slight possibility of season’s first light snowfall at a few plains (45% chances) during the next 24 hours,” the forecast read.
The local Meteorological Department has, however, predicted no significant weather activity till December 20th.
In its advisory, the MeT has predicted cold & dry weather over many stations during the next 10 days and appealed to the tourists, travellers and transporters to follow administration and traffic advisory.
The Meteorological Department has forecast a spell of wet weather at scattered places.
The night temperatures improved across the Valley, including Srinagar, owing to overcast skies. However, the minimum temperature continued to settle below the freezing point across the Kashmir valley.
Against previous night’s minus 5.4 degree Celsius, Srinagar, the summer capital of JAMMU and Kashmir, has recorded a low of minus 3.3 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg, a famous ski-resort, recorded the night temperature of minus 6.0 degree Celsius while in Pahalgam, the mercury settled at minus 1.8 degree Celsius.
Qazigund, a gateway of Kashmir, has recorded a low of minus 4.4 degree Celsius while Kupwara in North Kashmir and Kokernag in South Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.5 degree Celsius and 2.0 degree Celsius respectively.
While issuing advisory, the department said that in view of sub-freezing temperature and icy conditions over roads of important passes and higher reaches, the tourists, travelers and transporters are advised to follow advisories from administration and Traffic Department.
Doctors have advised people, especially the children and elderly, to take precautions and stay indoors.
