J-K to adopt Kerala’s model to modernise govt schools
The Jammu and Kashmir government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kozhikode-based Faizal and Shabana Foundation to adopt Kerala’s ‘Nadakkavu model’ of modernising government schools in the state, reported a National media outlet.
“It will be first introduced in the government higher secondary school for girls in Kothibagh, Srinagar. The objective is to establish the school as a centre of educational excellence, which can serve as a blueprint for other schools throughout J&K,” a statement from the foundation said.

The foundation had modernised the infrastructure and raised the educational standards of the 130-year-old Government Vocational Higher Secondary School for Girls at Nadakkavu, Kozhikode in 2013, by spending 20 crore rupees.
As per the report, the objective was to promote ordinary schools to international standards through multiple interventions.
Over 1,200 schools, mainly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, have adopted the model within 10 years of its inception, the foundation said. It has been introduced in a few schools in West Africa, it said.
Dr Tassaduq Hussain Mir, director of school education, J-K, said the government would replicate the model once it is established. “We are confident that this collaboration between the Government of Jammu and Kashmir and the Faizal and Shabana Foundation would create a brighter future for students of Kashmir and contribute to the development of a robust educational system,” he said.
Under the agreement, the foundation will provide funding for the project and assume responsibility for its implementation. This includes the school’s holistic development.
According to foundation chairman Faizal Kottikollon, the model can transform education in public schools across J-K and this is an attempt to create a robust educational system in the country. The foundation will also collaborate with Indian and international institutions to conduct training programmes for the school’s teaching staff and students, its global head Dr Joseph Sebastian said. It will also link students with centres of academic excellence, reads the report.
The UAE-based Malayali industrialist couple, Faizal E Kottikollon and wife Shabana Faizal, had founded the foundation in the UAE in 2007. Faizal is the founder and chairman of KEF Holdings and wife Shabana Faizal its vice chairperson.
