Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth Guru of the Sikh religion. The five K’s of Sikhism were introduced by him. They are kangha, kesh, kachera, kara and kirpan. Guru Gobind Singh was born as Gobind Rai at Patna Sahib, also known as Takht Sri Patna Sahib (now in Patna), to Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Guru of Sikhism, and Mata Gujri.

According to the Nanakshahi calendar, Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, was born in 1666 on Saptami Tithi, Shukla Paksha (the waxing moon phase) of the month Poh (Paush). Guru Gobind Singh’s Jayanti, however, occurs every year in December or January according to the Gregorian calendar.

On this day, people go to a Gurudwara, where special prayer meetings are organised for the day.

Often there are talks about history — Guru Gobind Singh’s life, teachings, and impact. Apart from this, special dishes are prepared to be enjoyed for this day. However, in some places, a large procession takes place to spread the cheer. Some of these processions are organised by Gurudwaras. Many families honor the day at home by holding kirtans, and many do Seva – an important part of the Sikh religion. Usually, they prepare food and distribute it amongst the needy.
