With foreign returnees among fresh Covid cases amid spreading infections in several countries, especially China, India has drastically stepped up coronavirus monitoring measures, as part of which mock drills are being held today across a number of health facilities in several states and Union territories to ensure their readiness to deal with any eventuality related to the novel virus, following an advisory by the Centre.
Should India worry about BF.7 Covid variant?
Before the current Covid spike in China, variants with similar genetic make-up as BF.7 had already been spotted in about 90 countries since February 2021, according to data by the California-based Scripps Research Institute.
BF.7 still accounts for less than 0.5 per cent of samples worldwide and is a branch of the BA.5 sub-variant of Omicron. Experts say it is unlikely to cause much impact in India, where a majority of the population has double immunity—both from natural infection and vaccines.
