Every year, August 9 is celebrated as the International day of the world’s indigenous people across the globe. The day throws light on raising awareness of the role of indigenous people and the need to preserve their communities. The United Nations dedicated this day to recognise the contributions made through the contributions and achievements of the indigenous communities. The issues related to the indigenous group were addressed by the economic and social council, who made a resolution in April 2000 to create the Permanent United Nations forum.

The United Nations initiated its first working group on the indigenous population through the United Nations in a UN meeting taking place in Geneva. Later, the UN body drafted a Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The aim of this day is to work on issues like education, culture, economic and social development, the environment and the health of the communities.
So finally, the United Nations General Assembly on December 23, 1994, decided to observe this day as the International day of the world’s indigenous peoples, on August 9.
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WORLD’S INDIGENOUS PEOPLES 2022: SIGNIFICANCE
The day plays a significant role in sharing updates that happened on the annual projects and the activities based on the themes announced.
And this year the event is organised by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), which will host a virtual session from 9 am to 11 am (EST) on August 09, 2022.
The event invites indigenous peoples, member states, UN entities, civil society and the general public to join the virtual session for discussing the current scenario of the world’s indigenous communities.
