The district administration Jammu has banned the use of nylon and plastic thread in view of the kite flying season ahead as a preventive measure.

“Kite flying festival or season is going on and will continue for some time in the District and it has been observed that plastic or nylon (Manja) threads are being used for kite flying in violation of SRO 126,” An order issued by the District Magistrate read.

the ban is imposed on procuring, stocking, sale and use of plastic and nylon strings (Manja) whereas and the use of these threads instead of traditional kite flying cotton thread, involves threat to birds and human lives which is evident from the past reports and cases recorded during previous kite flying festivals and season, the order read.
It further read that it is imperative to ensure safety of all including children who participate in kite flying as also to prevent danger to birds and initiate necessary measures accordingly.

However, District Magistrate, Jammu, Avny Lavasa in exercise of the powers under Section 144 CrPC, have ordered that no plastic/nylon thread (manja) or similar such synthetic material imported/indigenous shall be sold or used for kite flying under the jurisdiction of Jammu District with immediate effect. “Any person, who contravenes this order, shall be liable to be punished,” he said.
