An oil tanker’s driver was arrested today at Rajbagh in Kathua after 573 Kg poppy hidden in bags was seized from his vehicle.

The accused got arrested at Rajbagh police station in Kathua while he was going from Srinagar to Punjab , the vehicle’s tank was fully loaded with bags of poppy straw weighing around 573 Kgs.

SSP Kathua said that from the last one year, they are making their best endeavours to decline the drug peddling in their area. Today while carrying out a routine vehicle inspection on the Kathua highway, they checked an oil tanker from which they seized numerous poppy straw bags, then the local magistrate was called on the spot and the quantity of the drugs was weighed that amounts to 573 Kilograms.

The SSP, Kathua further revealed that the accused identified as Shauqat Ali S/o Maryam Shah resident of Channi, Jammu.It has been disclosed that the tanker got loaded from Sangam area of Anantnag and was being taken to its destination in Punjab when it was caught on the highway.

Moreover the SSP, Kathua has advised the local people to help the Police department and inform if they find any suspicious drug trafficking activity in their area.

Moreover, he informed that with the aid of central govt the Police department of Kathua is going to open a drug rehablitation centre near the local toll-plaza for the youngsters who have become drug addicts.

He further told that the Police department, Kathua is coordinating with the state police department of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and have been sharing inputs with them about the local drug peddlers.

He also stated that the Police have been on high alert and vigilant keeping in view the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. They are also carrying –out thorough vehicle inspections on daily basis and have deployed strict security arrangements to avoid any untoward incident in Jammu.
