The Jammu and Kashmir police has ordered a formal inquiry and suspended one of its officials after a Srinagar youth died after he was called for questioning by the police.
The family or Muneer Ahmad has alleged foul play leading to his death on Saturday evening.
” A formal inquiry into the matter has started and one of the official of Nowgam police station has been placed under suspension for a fair and transparent inquiry”, a police spokesman said .
” The police reiterates its resolve to conduct the departmental inquiry proceedings in a professional and transparent manner without any favour or bias “.
The family of Muneer staged a protest on Saturday evening alleging that he was tortured in police custody which led to his death. The demonstration continued till Saturday midnight.
Police said that Muneer was called to the police station on July 9 for being involved in a theft case.
On the other hand People ‘s Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti hit out at the police for attributing death to the young man being a drug addict.
” Tragic that a young man’s alleged death in custody is later attributed him being a drug addict. When these smear allegations couldn’t be further from the truth. Hybrid, white collar millitant OGW , and now drug addicts have seemingly become reason enough to justify these killings “, her statement read .
