The Supreme Court on Thursday enhanced the sentence of Navjot Singh Sidhu to one year imprisonment in a 1988 road rage accident case in which one person named Gurnam Singh had died.
Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu jailed in nearly three decades old street violence case. The Supreme Court pronounced the sentence. At that time, Sidhu was accused of beating up a man by parking a car on the road. The man later died of a head injury. A case of involuntary murder was also registered against Sidhu at one point of time, however, which was later dismissed. After so many years, the supreme court sentenced Sidhu to one year in the same case. The court ordered him to surrender.
The 1988 incident on December 27 that year, Sidhu had an argument with a man named Gurnam Singh on the road. It gradually reached the hustle and bustle from the noise. He allegedly pulled the man out of the car and beat him up. The man was hit on the head and allegedly died from it.
In the 1988 road accident case, Sidhu was initially released with a small fine, but the hearing of the case was once again started on the basis of a complaint by the family of the deceased. Sidhu was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment in the case by the apex court.
Sidhu will be taken into custody by the Punjab police as per the order. Sidhu was earlier let off with a fine of Rs 1000. Now, the maximum possible punishment under Section 323 of ipc has been awarded to Sidhu.
