Nagaon/Guwahati, Dec 20: Eight elephants were killed and one injured after being struck by the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express in Assam’s Hojai district early Saturday morning, forest officials confirmed.

The train, bound for New Delhi, derailed along with five coaches and its engine, though no passengers were reported injured, according to Northeast Frontier Railway authorities. The accident occurred around 2:17 am near the Changjurai area of Hojai district.

Nagaon Divisional Forest Officer Suhash Kadam and other forest officials reached the site to assess the situation. Train services on the affected Jamunamukh–Kampur section have been diverted, and restoration work is underway.

The Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express connects Sairang near Aizawl in Mizoram to Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi. Authorities said further investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident and prevent similar accidents in the future.
