Kashmir, Dec 8 : A major food safety concern has surfaced in Kashmir after 119 dead chickens were found just hours after the Animal Husbandry Department certified a consignment of 2,700 birds as healthy.
The truck had been cleared at the Zig-Lower Munda Check Post in Qazigund, Anantnag, where officials reported no sick or dead birds. But when the vehicle reached Aluchi Bagh Bund, volunteers from Animal Rescue Kashmir found 119 dead chickens during unloading.
Officials suggested the deaths may have been caused by delays in transportation, starvation, or hypothermia. Still, the discovery has raised doubts about the credibility of the department’s health certificate, especially since the consignment lacked proper receipts and traceability details.
Authorities have taken samples for postmortem and launched an investigation to determine how such a large number of birds died shortly after being declared healthy.
