Washington DC: A mass shooting at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, left three people dead, including the suspect, and three others injured on Monday, according to authorities.
The incident occurred during a youth hockey game, with two school teams playing at the time of the shooting. Police said the gunman was fatally shot at the scene. The three injured victims were rushed to hospital and are reported to be in critical condition.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect appeared to be targeting his own family members, officials said. Further details are awaited as authorities continue their probe.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said the state is closely monitoring the situation. In a post on X, he said he had spoken with Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien and the Rhode Island State Police, who are coordinating with local law enforcement agencies. He added that his thoughts and prayers are with those affected.
The shooting comes months after an incident at Brown University, located a few kilometres away, where a gunman opened fire at the Barus and Holley engineering building in December last year, killing two students and injuring nine others.
Earlier this month, police also arrested a 16-year-old student in connection with a shooting at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville.
Investigations into the Rhode Island shooting are ongoing.
