Kashmir , Jan 14 : A biting cold wave continued across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, with most parts of the Kashmir Valley recording subzero night temperatures, while Ladakh remained the coldest region as the mercury fell below minus 11 degrees Celsius.
Shopian recorded the lowest temperature in the Kashmir region at minus 7.5 degrees Celsius. Pulwama followed at minus 7.0 degrees, while Sopore registered minus 6.9 degrees. Anantnag and Awantipora also saw sharp drops, recording minus 6.6 degrees and minus 6.4 degrees respectively.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius, while the Srinagar airport area was colder at minus 6.0 degrees. Pahalgam also reported a low of minus 6.0 degrees, whereas Gulmarg recorded minus 3.8 degrees. Baramulla was comparatively warmer, with a minimum of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius.
Ladakh continued to face extreme cold conditions. Leh and Hanle jointly recorded the lowest temperature at minus 11.4 degrees Celsius. Nubra Valley followed at minus 10.4 degrees, while Kargil registered minus 10.0 degrees, making Ladakh the coldest region overall.
In the Jammu region, temperatures remained relatively milder, though some areas hovered close to freezing. Rajouri recorded the lowest minimum in the region at minus 0.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Bhaderwah at 0.5 degrees and Udhampur at 1.0 degree. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 4.0 degrees, while Katra and Banihal settled at 5.5 degrees and 5.3 degrees respectively.
Meteorological officials said cold and dry weather is likely to persist in the coming days, especially in higher reaches, with freezing nights expected across the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh.
