Sydney, Dec 15: Police have identified the gunmen behind the deadly Bondi Beach shooting as a father-son duo from Lahore, Pakistan. The attack, which occurred during the ‘Chanukah by the Sea’ event, claimed 16 lives, including the elder shooter. Fifty-year-old Sajid Akram was fatally shot by police during the incident, while his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram was wounded and is receiving treatment at a hospital, New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed. The victims ranged in age from 10 to 87 years. Authorities also discovered a vehicle containing several improvised explosive devices on Campbell Parade in Bondi. Commissioner Lanyon confirmed that the incident is being treated as a terrorist attack. The Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT), comprising state and federal agencies, believes the attackers pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. Two IS flags were recovered from the attackers’ car, one of which was visible on the vehicle’s bonnet in footage from the scene. ASIO had previously taken an interest in Naveed Akram in 2019 after foiling plans for an IS-inspired attack, though he was later assessed as not posing an ongoing threat. Investigators also found that Naveed had links with an IS operative currently serving a prison sentence for planning insurgent activities. Commissioner Lanyon said Sajid Akram had held a licensed firearm for the past 10 years. Naveed Akram, an unemployed bricklayer, reportedly lost his job two months ago. The family lives in a three-bedroom home in Bonnyrigg along with Naveed’s parents, sister, and brother. Naveed’s mother expressed shock over her son’s involvement, stating she could not recognise him in images from the scene and did not believe he was capable of such violence or extremist activity.

A unified CDF command would bring the Pakistan Army, Air Force, and Navy under a single top-tier authority, potentially streamlining decision-making on defence, crisis response, and operational planning. Indian analysts believe such restructuring could signal Islamabad’s attempt to modernise its military architecture in line with global models, especially during a period of political volatility and economic strain. While the idea of a tri-services command has surfaced intermittently in Pakistan, intelligence assessments suggest it has gained renewed traction recently. According to reports available with Indian agencies, several senior retired Pakistani officers have pushed for this structure in closed-door sessions. One of the influential figures associated with the early conceptual framework is Lt Gen (r) Faiz Hameed, former DG ISI, whose tenure was marked by assertive institutional positioning. Indian strategic watchers note that a “key decision” involving Lt Gen (r) Faiz is expected soon — though its exact nature remains unclear. New Delhi views any development involving him with particular interest, given his past role in regional dynamics, his influence within power blocs inside Pakistan, and his deep imprint on the military-political landscape during critical periods. Within Pakistan, the proposed CDF HQ has reportedly triggered debates over its potential to alter inter-service equations. For India, such shifts are significant because Pakistan’s military remains the central driver of its security and foreign policy. A unified command could mean faster coordination, more integrated force posture, and possibly tighter centralised control over strategic assets. However, Indian experts caution that the creation of a CDF structure may also deepen internal frictions within Pakistan’s military hierarchy. Rivalries among service branches, apprehensions over shifting authority, and Rawalpindi’s sensitivity to institutional balance could delay or derail the proposal. No official announcement has been made so far, but Indian agencies believe the coming months may offer clearer signals. If implemented, the restructuring could mark a decisive transformation in Pakistan’s defence framework — a development New Delhi will continue to assess closely for its implications on regional security, crisis management, and military preparedness.
