Baramulla, Jan 07: Baramulla Police on Wednesday recovered a large quantity of a charas-like substance during a search operation in the Watergam area of Wagoora.
Police said they received specific and credible information around 9 pm that an individual, identified as Farooq Ahmad Chopan alias Beta, son of Ghulam Hassan Chopan and a resident of Watergam, had illegally stored a charas-like substance at his residence.
Following the input, a case under FIR No. 02/2026, registered under sections 8 and 20 of the NDPS Act, was lodged at Police Station Kreeri. The SHO Kreeri and the Executive Magistrate Wagoora were informed and accompanied the police team to the spot to ensure all legal formalities were followed.
During the search, police recovered and seized 7.212 kilograms of a charas-like contraband in the presence of the Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses, including numberdars, former sarpanches, and local police officials.
The accused has not been arrested so far, and further investigation is ongoing.
Police said efforts to curb drug trafficking will continue and urged the public to share any information related to narcotics to help tackle the menace.
