New Delhi, Jan 15: Air India has announced changes to its flight operations following the emerging security situation in Iran and the subsequent closure of the country’s airspace, a move that is expected to cause delays on several international routes.
In an official advisory, the national carrier said that in view of passenger safety, all Air India flights that usually overfly Iranian airspace are now operating via alternative routes. The airline cautioned that the rerouting could lead to extended flying times and schedule disruptions.
“Due to the evolving situation in Iran and the closure of its airspace, and in view of the safety of our passengers, Air India flights overflying the region are now using alternative routing, which may lead to delays,” the airline said in a statement.
The decision comes amid heightened tensions in the region, prompting aviation authorities to restrict or suspend air traffic through Iranian airspace. Several international airlines have taken similar measures to avoid the region, prioritising operational safety over flight schedules.
Passengers travelling on long-haul routes connecting India with Europe, North America, and parts of West Asia are likely to be the most affected, as these sectors traditionally pass through Iranian airspace. Aviation experts say rerouting flights could add 30 to 90 minutes to flight durations, depending on the destination and prevailing weather conditions.
Air India has advised passengers to check their flight status regularly through the airline’s official website and customer service channels before heading to airports. The carrier has also assured travellers that efforts are being made to minimise inconvenience and maintain schedule stability wherever possible.
The airline said ground staff and crew have been instructed to assist passengers facing delays or missed connections. In case of significant disruptions, Air India may offer rebooking options or other support in line with its passenger service policies.
The development comes at a time when concerns over regional instability are also affecting Indian nationals abroad. The government has issued advisories urging Indian citizens in Iran to remain cautious, while parents of students studying there have sought evacuation measures amid safety fears.
Civil aviation authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and further changes to flight operations may be announced if restrictions continue or expand. Industry officials said airlines will continue to assess airspace availability in coordination with international aviation regulators.
For now, Air India has reiterated that passenger safety remains its top priority, even if operational adjustments result in delays. Travellers have been urged to remain patient and plan their journeys with possible disruptions in mind as the situation evolves.
