Bandipora, February 13: In a major relief to residents of the border valley, the Border Roads Organisation has reopened the Gurez–Bandipora road, restoring connectivity to the remote Gurez valley and areas along the Line of Control after weeks of closure due to heavy snowfall.

The road passes through Razdan Top at an altitude of nearly 3,300 metres and usually remains shut for almost six months during winter because of extreme weather conditions.

Officials said the snow clearance operation was completed in record time despite sub-zero temperatures, icy stretches and strong winds. The 35-kilometre stretch from Bandipora to Razdan Top is considered especially challenging during peak winter.

Subject to fair weather and final clearance, regulated traffic will be allowed to ply from Bandipora to Gurez starting February 13. Movement will begin from TCP Tragbal at 9:00 AM, with a cut-off time fixed at 10:00 AM.

Authorities have said that heavy motor vehicles will not be permitted on the route. Vehicles must be equipped with anti-skid chains, failing which they will not be allowed to travel. Traffic will remain strictly one-way for now, with no movement allowed from Gurez towards Bandipora.

The early reopening is expected to ease hardships faced by residents of Gurez valley, who remain cut off during peak winter, affecting access to essential supplies, healthcare and other services. Officials have advised commuters to confirm road status before travel and adhere strictly to safety guidelines.
