Ganderbal, Jan 22: Ganderbal Police have busted an illegal timber smuggling case at Poshkar Kangan and recovered a large quantity of forest timber, officials said on Wednesday.
Acting on specific and credible information, police found that an individual, identified as Imtiaz Ahmad Banya, son of Husain Banya and a resident of Poshkar Kangan, had illegally extracted timber from a nearby forest area and dumped it in the courtyard of his residence.
Following the inputs, Police Station Kangan registered FIR No. 06/2026 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Indian Forest Act, and initiated an investigation.
On the directions of SSP Ganderbal, Khalil Ahmad Poswal (JKPS), a special police team conducted a search operation at the location, leading to the recovery of a substantial quantity of illegally procured forest timber. The timber was seized as per legal procedure, and the accused was taken into custody.
Police said further investigation is underway to determine the source of the timber and identify others involved in the smuggling network.
Ganderbal Police have urged the public to report any illegal activities related to forest resources, stressing that strict action will be taken against those involved in environmental crimes.
