Mumbai , Jan 18 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said the Bharatiya Janata Party now carries a major responsibility to fulfil the expectations of Mumbai’s residents after emerging as the largest party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections.

Reacting to the poll outcome, Abdullah said elections inevitably produce winners and losers, and the party that secures the highest number of seats must deliver on its promises. “The BJP has won the maximum seats, and it is now their duty to meet the hopes of the people of Mumbai,” he said.

Sharing his personal experience, the Chief Minister noted that Mumbai has witnessed significant changes over the years. He recalled spending three years in the city and said that large infrastructure projects, such as the Coastal Road, were once unimaginable. “Such projects have been completed, and if more development initiatives are taken up, they will directly benefit Mumbai’s residents,” he added.

According to official figures, the BJP won 89 seats, polling over 11.79 lakh votes, and emerged as the single largest party in the civic body. Its ally, the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, secured 29 seats, making the BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde) alliance the largest bloc in the BMC.

The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction), contesting in alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, won a combined total of 71 seats. The Congress secured 24 seats, while other parties including AIMIM, NCP, Samajwadi Party and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) also won representation.

The results point to a competitive and fragmented mandate in Mumbai’s civic polls, with alliances playing a key role in shaping the final outcome.
