The city of Jammu, which is becoming a smart city, will now be plastic and polythene free. In addition, pots, dustbins, chairs, and tables will be made from the plastic waste coming out of the houses. With this, the never-destroying plastic waste will not only be disposed of but will also generate income.
The Jammu Municipal Corporation has made preparations for this. In collaboration with NGOs, the Municipal Corporation has already made arrangements to set up a unit to dispose of plastic waste in Bandurakh, adjacent to the city. The corporation has been involved in this process since last year. In addition, Jammu Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with UNDP, RUDA and HDFC Bank, will make pots, dustbins, chairs, and tables from plastic waste generated from Jammu city. About 400 metric tonnes of garbage is generated from Jammu city every day, of which about 20 per cent of plastic also remains.
In the disposal unit of plastic waste installed in Bandhurakh, the waste is sorted into 16 types. After segregating all types of waste from it, using plastic in different ways becomes easy. Then the process of disposing of the plastic starts at different places. From making granules of plastic waste to making big pieces with machines. Apart from the National Highway Authority of India, the corporation has given this waste to NHPC. Now plastic goods will be made from this waste.
Recently, the Jammu Municipal Corporation has also got the second prize in Delhi for the disposal of plastic. Jammu Municipal Corporation became the second such corporation in the country to take effective steps to dispose of plastic waste. In the Plastic Recycling Conference Asia 2.0 held in Delhi on 28th April, Mayor Chandra Mohan Gupta received the award from Corporation Commissioner Avani Lavasa and Chairman of Swachh Bharat Committee of the Corporation Hardeep Singh Mankotia and Secretary Atul Gupta.
